I’m a proud owner of several melin hats. Two of my hats are more than one year old. I wear hats on a daily basis and I wear my melin hats most of all. Over months of usage, any hat will develop smudges and sweat stains.
I’ve washed many hats over the years. Other hats look ugly after washing them. When wet, the bill and/or crown of other hats will look wavey and old. With a melin hat, I can wash it and it will look like new. My oldest melin hat is over one year old, but it still looks fresh.
The best part about melin hats is that they’re built to handle water. Not only can they get wet, but they keep their structure even after being soaked. This is why a melin hat can be thoroughly washed to give it new life without ruining it.
But, it took a few tries to figure out how to get sweat stains out. I tried washing the hat by hand with water and a little bit of detergent as recommended by others. I also washed my hats in the washing machine as suggested by others. Neither of these options removed the sweat stains from my hats. In this post, I’ll share what to do to get your melin hat looking fresh and clean.
Step By Step Instructions
Items Needed
- A bucket, or large container with room temperature water. There should be enough water to submerge the hat most of the way.
- OxiClean.
- Soft Sponge or Towel.
Wet the hat
Fill a bucket, or large container, with room temperature water. There should be enough water to submerge the hat most of the way. then, Dip the hat in the water a few times to get it wet.
Sprinkle OxiClean
Sprinkle OxiClean all over the hat, especially the areas that are sweat stained or are noticeably dirty.
I tried laundry detergent, but it did not get the sweat stains out. I found that OxiClean is better at removing sweat stains.
Clean with Sponge or Towel
Wet your sponge or towel an gently rub the OxiClean all over the dirtiest areas.
Dunk and Swirl
Dunk the hat back into the water and agitate the hat around like it was in the washing machine. Do this for about a minute.
Soak
Leave the hat in the water and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
Rinse
Take the hat out of the water and rinse it with clean water.
Air Dry
Air dry your hat and notice the difference.
